Cracking the PM Career

Jackie Bavaro and Gayle Laakmann McDowell

About this book

Bavaro wrote this as the sequel to Cracking the PM Interview, and where that book was about getting hired this one is about the job and the ladder above it. It covers the core skills in detail, meaning product sense, execution, working with engineering and design, strategy and influence, then sets out what changes at each level from associate through group product manager and director. The chapters on career progression are the most useful part, since they describe the behaviours a promotion committee looks for rather than the ones a job description lists. At five hundred pages it is a reference to keep on the desk, and the section on frameworks is worth reading on its own.
